As we celebrate Austin Pride this August, it's a great time to reflect on the vibrant LGBTQIA+ community that makes Austin such a unique and inclusive city. Pride is more than just a celebration; it's a time to honor the resilience, strength, and diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community, especially our youth. This month, we're shining a spotlight on the incredible organizations and community groups that support LGBTQIA+ youth in Austin and exploring how you can get involved.
The Importance of Community Support for LGBTQIA+ Youth
LGBTQIA+ youth face unique challenges, from navigating their identities to overcoming societal barriers. Having a supportive community can make all the difference in their lives. According to the Trevor Project, LGBTQIA+ youth who have at least one accepting adult in their lives are 40% less likely to attempt suicide. This statistic underscores the importance of community support and resources for LGBTQIA+ youth.

The Impact of Community Support
Community organizations have transformed the lives of countless LGBTQIA+ youth in Austin. For instance, Freya (she/they), a 19-year-old trans youth, found solace and friendship through OutYouth's Drop-In Intiatives. "I have what I lost for a while, which is people that I can talk to and not feel worried about them judging me," Freya shares. "After getting more involved, I found myself going outside and and regularly taking care of myself."
Stories like Freya’s highlight the profound impact of community support on LGBTQIA+ youth. These organizations provide more than just resources; they offer hope, connection, and a sense of belonging.
How You Can Make a Difference
Getting involved in supporting LGBTQIA+ youth is easier than you might think! Here are some ways you can make a positive impact:
Volunteer: Many organizations need volunteers to assist with events, mentorship programs, and administrative tasks. Your time and skills can make a significant difference in the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth.
Donate: Financial contributions help organizations sustain their programs and expand their reach. Consider setting up a recurring donation to provide ongoing support.
Advocate: Use your voice to advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusion in your community. Attend local events, engage with policymakers, and spread awareness about the importance of supporting LGBTQIA+ youth.
Educate Yourself and Others: Take the time to learn about LGBTQIA+ issues and share your knowledge with friends and family. Education is a powerful tool for fostering understanding and acceptance.

Out Youth’s “Second-Chance Prom” Offered Adults a Chance to Remake Memories
Almost everyone has a story from their high school senior prom ranging from magical to forgettable.

Out Youth’s second annual Second-Chance Prom Saturday, April 1, offered everyone the chance for a prom night “do-over.
Hosted by the W Hotel in downtown Austin, approximately 150 guests enjoyed an evening of dancing, entertainment and a silent auction amid tropical plants and decorations supporting the “Prom in Paradise” theme.
The event raised more than $20,000 for Out Youth and some of the proceeds helped support our annual Youth Prom for LGBTQ+ teens two weeks later at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School.
We’re grateful to our Prom Co-Chairs Suzanne Alley and Kody Silva (Out Youth Board Members) and their hard-working committee that included Out Youth board members Gabby Ayala, Krissi Lindsey, Nathan Michaud and Ted Burton. Plus Out Youth supporters Roseann Ferraro, Layne Box, and Crystal Lantrip.
Our 27th Annual OutYouth Prom was a Huge Success
Out Youth’s 2017 Youth Prom was a smashing success.
Three hundred youth from all over Central Texas dressed up in some amazing outfits to join us at St. Andrews Episcopal High School for a night of dancing and celebration of being their authentic fabulous selves.
OutYouth’s 2017 Youth Prom was a smashing success.
Three hundred youth from all over Central Texas dressed up in some amazing outfits to join us at St. Andrews Episcopal High School for a night of dancing and celebration of being their authentic fabulous selves. This year educators from the Umlauf Sculpture Garden provided the opportunity for Prom attendees to make art projects when they needed a break from dancing. DJ Girlfriend, our ever-loyal emcee, played some great tunes - mix of 80s dance classics and contemporary pop music.
I asked one of our youth how they would explain OutYouth Prom to someone who had never been to prom, and this is what he had to say:
“OutYouth Prom is a safe prom for anyone LGBTQ+,” said the Youth. “I really liked that about it. I was actually comfortable wearing something feminine for once, which is relatively unusual for me. What happens at Prom? Well just about everything that happens at a 'normal' prom. Well, I guess 'normal' isn’t correct. Our prom should be the 'normal' one. This prom is like any other prom, except it is OURS! That’s what makes it special. Out of all the dances I’ve ever been, this one was the most comfortable for me.”
Generous donors supported our Youth Prom. Casey Legler visited the Drop-in Center back in March and was so moved by our young folks, she coordinated donations of Alexander Olch bow ties and Milk makeup for our youth. We also crafted some homemade pocket squares, hair bows, and other accessories in the drop in center in order to give everyone's outfit that extra Out Youth pizzaz.
It was a truly fabulous evening. Our youth have already begun the countdown to Prom 2018.
