Two Ways to Volunteer

Volunteering at Out Youth is a great way to get involved in the community and support our life-changing and life-saving work.

We have two kinds of volunteers:

  • Outreach Volunteers help us spread the word about Out Youth at community-based events so the community can learn more about our work.

  • Programs Volunteers work directly with our youth at the Out Youth Community Center and other youth events.

Get Started with Volunteering at Out Youth

All volunteers at Out Youth begin as Outreach Volunteers. (See below for more information on becoming a Programs Volunteer.)

To get started as an Outreach Volunteer at Out Youth, you must set up a VolunteerHub account, submit an application, and complete a background check.

Set Up Your Outreach Volunteer Account on VolunteerHub

STEP 1: Create a VolunteerHub Account

Follow this link and click “Create New Account” to create an account on VolunteerHub.

STEP 2: Submit an Outreach Volunteer Application

Once your VolunteerHub account is created, you must answer some standard questions to apply as an Outreach Volunteer and complete your volunteer profile.

STEP 3: Complete a Background Check

After completing your application, you will receive an email from Sterling Volunteers inviting you to complete your volunteer background check.

It can take 48-72 hours for the email invitation from Sterling Volunteers to arrive. Background checks take 24-72 hours to process, though they can take longer depending on various factors.

Background checks cost $20. If you need financial assistance to cover the background check cost, please email volunteer@outyouth.org.

STEP 4: Sign Up for Volunteer Events

Once your background check is clear, you can register for Outreach Volunteer events in VolunteerHub.

Become a Programs Volunteer

Programs Volunteers serve the youth directly by attending program events for our youth.

The Programs Volunteer position is highly competitive and requires a:

  • Additional application process

  • Interview and approval from the Programs Manager

  • Current background check

  • 2-hour in-person training

Programs Volunteers must also:

  • Have no connection to a current youth client who attends program events.

  • Be at least 20 years old or older to volunteer with our Pre-Teen (ages 9-12) and Teen (ages 13-17) programs.

  • Be at least 25 years old or older to volunteer with our Young Adult (ages 18-23) program.
