Out Youth’s Drop-In Center is a safe space and “home sweet home” for LGBTQ+ youth like you! And, for our allies, we welcome you with open arms.

The Drop-In Center is actually an old two-story blue house with a big front porch. We believe that anyone who visits Out Youth should feel at home, and you should consider yourself a part of the Out Youth family.

When you are at the Drop-In Center you can participate in programs and services, but we hope you’ll see it as a place where you can be yourself, make friends, and learn life skills that will help you develop into happy, healthy, and successful young adult!

Check out our calendar for more information about programming, groups and center closures.

FAQs

Who can come to Out Youth Drop-in?

Youth aged 12-18 who identify within the LGBTQ+ umbrella, or are questioning their sexual and/or gender identity, are welcome to Youth Drop-in on Sundays and Wednesdays. Allies are also welcomed.

From 4:30pm-8:30pm, the Drop-In Center is Youth only, with exceptions for staff, volunteers and individuals arriving for counseling sessions. Unauthorized adults are not allowed in the Drop-In Center during Drop-In hours, and this includes parents and caregivers. Adults are welcomed to wait in our lobby while Drop-In is taking place.

If you would like a tour of the Center, or to meet our staff, please arrive before Drop-In hours.

Who supervises Drop-In?

Drop-In is managed by Out Youth Programs staff and Out Youth Clinical Staff, and is supported by a team of volunteers who have been background checked and trained. Every area in the Drop-In Center (Backyard, Family Room, Kitchen and Lobby) is monitored by at least one volunteer to ensure the safety and inclusion of every youth who comes to Drop-In.

There are clinical therapists and clinical interns on duty during every Drop-In. This means that youth always have the ability to check-in with a therapist if they’re going through a life challenge. The clinical team also helps youth sign up for counseling screenings if they request one. Our groups are facilitated by our team of therapists as well.

We encourage all interested parents to meet our team of friendly staff and volunteers when first bringing their youth to our center.

What happens on my first day?

When you arrive at Out Youth for Drop-in, you will be warmly welcomed into our family and asked for your preferred name and pronouns. There is a brief, digital intake form that will need to be completed upon arrival that asks for your contact information and some questions about your background.

After you complete your paperwork, one of our friendly youths will give you a tour of the space and answer any questions that you might have. You might be nervous at first, but rest assured that everyone feels like that at first. Our youth and staff will make sure that you are included in conversations and activities.

You will receive an orientation following announcements where you will learn more about the history, rules and offerings of the Out Youth Drop-In Center.

Do my parents need to know I'm here?

No. We will never contact your parents if you are not comfortable with that. We ask that you provide an emergency contact, but this does not have to be your parents.

What happens at Drop-in?

From 4:30-6:00pm, youth hang out, eat snacks from our free snack closet, check in with counselors and staff if needed, catch up with friends, or participate in a game or arts and crafts. The Drop-in Center is a space for you  to express and explore your genuine identity while connecting with other youth who share similar experiences.

At 6pm, everyone in the house gathers in our family room to do introductions, answer a question of the day, and listen to announcements. Youth can share personal life updates with each other and receive support and congratulations.

After introductions and announcements, youth will choose between a programming activity or a support group. Programming in the past has included song/poetry workshops, informational sessions, art lessons, speakers, and much more.

Our group schedule is as follows:

Wednesdays: Gender Identity

Last Wednesday of the Month: Youth Led Hot Topic Group

Sundays: Wellness Circle

After programming, youth continue to hang out until 8:30pm.

Do I have to pay to come to Drop-in?

No. Drop-in is completely free thanks to our generous donors. You or your parents are welcome to make a donation so we can continue to grow Out Youth's mission.

Why should I come to Drop-In?

If you are looking to meet other LGBTQIA+ youth, receive affirmation and support about your sexual orientation or gender identity, want to learn more about what it means to be an LGBTQIA+ individual, sign up for free counseling, access gender affirming items, participate in enriching activities, learn more about our services, eat really good snacks and more, then Drop-In is absolutely for you.

Even if you’re shy, haven’t come out yet, or never been in an LGBTQIA+ affirming space, then we still welcome you to our space. Our staff, volunteers and returning youth will help you with any questions you might have.

Check our calendar for closures, programming and other event information.
