A Note from the Chair of the Board
Dear Out Youth Extended Family,
Welcome to 2007! The New Year is a time when we
tend to look back and look forward, reflect on what has passed,
and resolve to work towards a brighter future.
Every year brings its own challenges and struggles,
but 2006 was something else. Staging a comeback took rare dedication
from all of us working together. Out Youth continues to grow stronger
from our combined efforts... and we're excited about the year to
come!
Part of our pulling together has been a close look
at what makes OY so special. When the doors closed, we repeatedly
heard OY described by youth as... (click

Out Youth is happy to announce that we have a new Director of Youth
Leadership and Development, Monica Ann Arrambide!
Monica has over a decade of experience working with the LBGTQI
community as an activist and grassroots organizer. She also has
a stellar track record in the social and human services, education,
program and project management, and community outreach.
Monica organized and oversaw the daily operations of the first
LBGTQI drop-in center in the Central Coast of California. In addition,
she has supervised youth outreach workers as part of a safer sex
program, coordinated an LBGT speakers bureau, and delivered numerous
presentations on LBGTQI issues to a wide variety of audiences, including
community groups, schools, and social service organizations. In
2005, she received the Lauren Wyeth Award for Outstanding Work With
LBGT Youth.
As Out Youths Director of Youth Leadership and Development, Monica
will be responsible for helping create youth-driven psycho-educational,
recreational, dramatic and artistic group activities at the Drop-In
Center. She will also be in charge of fostering the development of
mutually empowering democratic processes within the Out Youth community
and providing culturally relevant programming that promotes diversity,
builds solidarity, and encourages creativity and leadership. We are
very excited to have Monica at Out Youth. Please welcome her with
open arms!

Out Youth welcomes Lisa Rogers back as Diriector of Outreach
and Civic Engagement!
In 1990, Lisa Rogers co-founded Out Youth and helped guide it through
its first 7 years as Executive Director. We are thrilled to announce
that Lisa is returning to Out Youth, version 21st Century!
Lisa is a Licensed Master of Social Work. She received both her
Master's and Bachelors degrees from the University of Texas at
Austin. She also earned a Master of Arts degree in Religion from
the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest. She has worked as a therapist
at Waterloo Counseling Center and as a chaplain at The Bridge Drug
and Alcohol Treatment Center in Austin.
In addition, Lisa has an extensive and distinguished history as
a community builder and civic servant in Austin. Through her work
as a singer/songwriter/guitar player for the musical duo, The Therapy
Sisters, she has brought joy and inspired action throughout our
community and beyond.
As Director of Outreach and Civic Engagement, Lisa's charge is
to create opportunities for LBGTQIA youth to develop their community
leadership and organizing skills and become agents for positive
social change. She will pave the way for the creation of several
youth-led projects, including the youth organizing program, SMYLE
(Sexual Minority Youth for Leadership and Equality), Building Alliances
(an initiative in support of Gay Straight Alliances in schools),
a youth speakers' bureau, and the Safe Schools Coalition (a statewide
advocacy effort). Join us in giving Lisa a warm and excited welcome!

We have so much excitement and gratitude over the American Fiesta
event earlier this month! It was wonderful to come together as supporters
of OY and our youth. Because of the generous donations we've received
recently, we've been able to hire staff and reinstate important
programming. Deepest thanks to everyone who organized or participated
in the event. We look forward to the next time we're all able to
be together... and in the meantime, we'll continue to seek support
for Out Youth as we develop the organization into everything it
needs to be!

Out Youth will now be open Sundays and Wednesdays! We're excited
to welcome Wednesday night drop-in hours back to Out Youth starting
July 12th. As always, the Drop In Center will be open to youth between
4:30 and 8:30.
The fabulous American Fiesta benefit performance has changed date
and venue. Due to flooding at the State Theater, the event will
now take place August 1st at UT's McCullough Theatre. Click
here for more details about the performance or to view sponsorship
information. And visit our calendar
to keep up with Out Youth's other upcoming events!

The drop in center is open every Sunday from 4:30-8:30, and we'll
be opening more nights a week as soon as possible. This Sunday the
25th, there will be a Cookout
to Say Hello and Goodbye during drop-in for youth, volunteers,
and board members to get better acquainted! We'll be welcoming some
new board members and saying goodbye to Kristin, volunteer extraordinaire,
as she sets off for California.
Out Youth is currently hiring for two positions: Clinical
Director and Program
Director! Please help us get the word out to help ensure that
we reach the right candidates for these critical positions. Review
of applications begins immediately.
Pride 2006 was wonderful to Out Youth! We heard from so many of
our family, friends and supporters at Pride events. We were especially
lucky to be featured at this year's Austin
